Description
Produced as a 3D printed replica for the Combat Air Museum, Topeka, Kansas.
The gun and ammunition pod was modelled in Fusion 360 using technical drawings and photos as references.
It was then scaled down to 80% - to match the scale of the replica Airco DH2 it would be attached to. Files were exported as STLs, imported into CURA, then printed on my TAZ 5 FDM printer.
The model was printed in PLA+ filament, then sealed with a lacquer to protect it from moisture / humidity.
Rather than printing off the rounds, 5.56mm shell casings were used - which were a very close match for a 0.30 cal round scaled down to 80%.
The 'roughed up' renders were done using Luxion's Keyshot and a procedural shader.
This completed my work for the DH2, as prior to this project, I had used Fusion to model and 3D print the Gnome Monosoupape B2 engine that this plane used.
Enjoy, Huw

where are the files
Hi Huw. Holland, very cool. Sounds like a clean process - very nice print - not always easy to achieve with 3D printing.
Hi Reid, sorry for tardy reply (now living in Holland, as of April 2018)... Print was pretty smooth to begin with, although lacquer (for UV protection) did provide some smoothing. Very happy with results though - and PLA was less susceptible to warping than ABS. Regards, Huw
hi very nice job. are the stl available for other ? if so could I please have use of them .I am looking to make 1 for our local museum at carlisle airport . Cheers Darren
Thanks Reid! Alas, some views are renders ;-). We may paint next projects though! Messaged you on Linked In ;-) Cheers, Huw
Wow, incredibly detailed model. How did you get the 3D printed parts to smooth? Did the lacquer fill in all the gaps, or was sanding required?
