Description

The locomotive bed for the front engine of a Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 'Big Boy' steam engine, from the original drawings.

This is/was supposed to be my retirement hobby/project. I've developed Fusion 360 models of the full-size parts with an eye to scaling them down to build something akin to

Live steam Big Boy 4005

The key parts are the locomotive beds, but I am having a little bit of difficulty finding a foundry willing/able to cast them for me. My wife is adamantly opposed to me trying to pour ~150 pounds of molten steel myself (a la myfordboy). To an extent I see her point....

Hi William, You should be extremely proud of what you have done and how you did it.
If I were you the first I would do would be to pour a medal to you on your chest for the your cad work.
Then I feel that your wife has the right idea about sub-letting the foundry to a company who do it every day.
They are easy to find, they are the guys with the burn marks all over their hands,

Frank, I do not know how practical this is for you, but here in Graz, Austria; we have.a 20 man foundry who delight in challenges like this. When they are casting jobs like model wheels for 7.25 gauge, they use such fine sand that the finish is always "perfect plus". Contact me at russ@rad45.org for info if you are interested.

Frank,
If you go to the Union Pacific Historical Society (uphs.org) you can buy PDFs of the original drawings on CDs. Some of them, though, do look like they dipped chicken's feet in ink and turned them loose on the linen.

Bill
