Description

Hey everyone, my name is Ben Lorimore and I’m a 19 year old self-taught industrial designer from Portland Oregon.

The Space Cradle is a wood and leather ergonomic hand rest for 3D mice made by the company 3Dconnexion. A 3D mouse is a secondary mouse used along with a regular mouse to navigate in 3D programs like Fusion (instead of trying to orbit around with the view cube and your mouse). This was the first product I ever manufactured that I've designed and has by far been the most fun I’ve ever had designing simply because I’ve made my vision a reality (I did all the sourcing, engineering and manufacturing myself). Side note, all modeling, and CAM was done in Fusion.

I designed the Space Cradle because I was tired of the lack of ergonomics in my 3D mouse and I didn’t want to spend $300+ on a professional 3D mouse with a built in handrest and an assortment of buttons. I rarely even use the two buttons on my 3D mouse even after programing them, so I didn’t wan to pay for 20 more I wouldn’t ever use.

The inspiration of the Space Cradle came from Grovemade, a wood and leather tech accessories company also based in Portland. I love their line of products but they lack an accessory for my most prized piece of technology: my 3D mouse. So I decided to design one myself. I ended up liking its aesthetics and functionality so much, I decided to launch a Kickstarter for it.

The Space Cradle currently has only been manufactured in big leaf maple and brown leather due to a lack of funds but if Kickstarted, it will also be available in pacific madron and black leather, and dark willamette valley walnut and white leather (all locally sourced in Portland OR).

The wood is CNC routed, hand sanded, and oiled. The cushion is made of EVA foam for a perfect medium of comfort and stability and then handed wrapped in upholstery leather for a beautiful final touch.

The Space Cradle works with the SpaceNavigator, SpaceMouse Wireless and SpaceNavigator for Notebooks made by 3Dconnexion.

Check out my Kickstarter!

Nice work cad is a killer on wrists and neck. I know because I produced the worlds first WristRest for MousePads in 1994 for the same reasons. Need free advice or assistance, skype: ergodesk
