Description

Overview -

The primary objectives the client expressed for the shelter were as follows:

• A design which is sympathetic towards the Highland landscape, as well as relating itself to the Jacobite ethos and Loch Ness.

• Develop a design that would be non-invasive to the surrounding landscape and communities, to ensure the preservation of the natural beauty of the area.

• Specify technical details and construction materials to provide an insight into the shelters construction, practicality and durability.

Functionality -

The shelter provides adequate cover for up to 60 visitors at any given time, as well as being fully DDA compliant. The building offers an organised routine of waiting for guests, allowing a queueing system to take effect. This is achieved by having a one-way system at either end of the shelter, providing better congestion management during busier periods.

The frame of the shelter forms a gradual curve which is divided by laminated glass sheets. This form cantilevers over the length of the structure to create an organic appearance, embossed by timber rafters, creating a skeletal effect.

The entrance is positioned facing the Clansman Hotel (hill facing) allowing visitors to take refuge at the earliest opportunity. The initial view upon entering the shelter showcases timber rafters, each with a uniquely carved Celtic pattern and wood finish. These are highlighted by natural light exposure through narrow glazed openings along the length of the shelter, forming varying shadow effects throughout the day. During darker hours, artificial lighting behind the Celtic engravings provides a backlit effect, drawing attention to the various patterns.

The appearance from the shelters opposing side contrasts greatly. Exposed steel beams provide a link to the metals typically used in Jacobite weaponry and shields. The steel is lit with artificial lighting at later hours, revealing a lightly scratched surface, creating a traditional appearance.

The outer cladding material used on the shelter is Caithness stone, which is local to the area and naturally present, providing the building with a link to the vicinity. Internally, light sandstone rubble is used to provide maximum light reflectance, as well as provide the most prominent appearance when the wall is lit at night. The end of the shelter uses a glass sheet to provide protection against oncoming wind and rain from the direction of the loch. The remainder of the shelter consists of curved walls and a bespoke floor and seat design.

Buildability -

Factors taken into consideration when considering the buildability of the design were as follows:

• Weather conditions on site.

• Site location is on the main trunk road (A82) between Inverness and Fort Augustus, obstruction to traffic must be minimised.

• The site has limited space for storage of materials.

• Site accessibility to tourists during construction of the shelter.

The primary structure of the shelter is to be light steel frame sections, each encased with timber on three sides, allowing for the fixture of other building materials.

These sections would be manufactured off site and delivered to site. As budget is of high priority to the client for this project, the majority of work will be undertaken on site
